Twelve Days of Christmas: Fourth Day

In Lessons from a Small Town

Mother’s brass candlesnuffer

Candles are perfect for the dark days of December. Their warm glow softens the harsh shadows of winter. Throughout my childhood in Ames, my family dined by candle light in the dining room. At an early age I learned how to use a candlesnuffer. My sisters and I took turns for this special task. But at Christmastime it was my job alone to light the votive candles in their glass cups on the shelves of our room divider near the family room. A long wooden fireplace match was the perfect device to light all 10 wicks with one strike. It was magical.

“On the Fourth Day of Christmas my true love gave to me…

four vintage snowmen,

old fashioned snowmen candles  purchased in 1990’s

three special balls,

David’s, Samantha’s and Richard’s ornaments

two wooden skis,

Kim’s wooden skis
            (circa 1956)

and a Christmas plate for Santa’s midnight snack.

I am having a blast with this song! I might be on to a new career.
