Your Own Story

 In Inspirational

Everyone has a story. You are the only one who gets to write your own story.

Some bravely choose the uncomfortable nonfiction version. Warts and all. Others choose the more palatable creative fiction version in which personal history becomes slightly revised.

But in any case, words need to be selected carefully. And in the end, each writer must own every syllable, then set the history chapter aside, and move forward with life.

A New Year provides a chance to pause, look back and possibly write a few chapters of your story. But beware! Use of a nostalgia lens can be perilous. Its emotional warm haze tends to smooth out the rough edges and mute harsh colors. The resulting view only provides temporary comfort in an otherwise uncomfortable reality.  It takes courage to remove the rose-colored glasses and substitute a magnifying glass for an honest evaluation. Daily undulations allow an opportunity to grow and self-evaluate. They are fuel for your own story.

Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get. (Forrest Gump)

I think if all of the candies in the box had smooth, creamy fillings, life would be too predictable and boring. Whenever I open a box of assorted bonbons, I slowly reach in and hope for a gooey chocolate covered cherry. I moan when instead my front teeth crunch into a solid butter brickle. I swallow the dry slivers and later dismiss the disappointment. Then, the next time, I am more careful when my fingers meander through the petite paper cups. The hunt intensifies. A great sense of satisfaction erupts when my taste buds dance with a good choice.

May the year 2020 bring you a balanced box of chocolates. Cherish the soft centers of the sweet moments of life. Tolerate the crunchy hard layers of less-than-desired occasions. Be patient. Stay strong. Reach in and try again.

In closing, I have to admit that a New Year taunts me with the need for a traditional and profound resolution. I stay away from New Year’s resolutions. Since I am a rule follower, I do not like to get boxed in and end up admitting failure. However, I do try and start off the year with a clearer mindset. I try to make small personal improvements and take stock of the past year’s gifts.

So instead, I will share my intentions for 2020:

I will try to stay more in the present and remember to say a simple thank you to family, friends, and even strangers.

I will try to shed any self-imposed layers of guilt that strangle my true feelings and intentions.

I will try to be more honest and authentic in my words and deeds and own each one and document a few.

And most of all, I will continue to freely unleash my zest for life and allow my sense of humor to fill my days with laughter, even when a cloud momentarily passes over my sunshine.

Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy 2020 and may you write your own story in a way that is true and meaningful.

Happy New Year to all!

Kim
