National Reading Month

In Book & Story News, Events

National Reading Month is coming to an end. As we say goodbye to March, let’s acknowledge the designation given to this special month.

Dr. Seuss, a favorite children’s book author, was born on March 2, 1904. In 1994, the United States declared March as the first National Reading Month in his honor. Schools celebrate with author appearances, celebrity readers, and fun kid-centered literary activities. In addition, public libraries around the country are abuzz.

According to researchers, reading can reduce stress and improve vocabulary. In addition, people who read more fiction books are more likely to be kinder than those who don’t. Wow! The impact of the printed word is amazing.

The talented Lancaster, PA artist Lisa Madenspacher, and I have created three children’s picture books together. The trilogy centers around the adventures of a hermit crab family. Our first book, Henri’s Home, came out in 2020. Followed by Henri to the Rescue in 2021, and Heidi Saves the Day in 2023. All three books continue to do well in multiple independent bookstores and gift shops in PA, NJ, DE, and FL.

In fact, I just received a re-order of our books from Books & Books @ The Studios of Key West, FL. We are especially proud to be on the shelves of the store of acclaimed children’s author Judy Blume.

I enjoy traveling around to elementary schools in Pennsylvania for author appearances to promote the love of reading through our high interest books. In addition, I explain my elementary school literary program, Plant a Story Seed and Watch it Grow. This fun incentive is designed to encourage young writers and readers.

On Tuesday April 1, 2025. I will be making an author visit to Saint Leo’s Elementary School in Lancaster, PA. In a school-wide assembly, I will share our book Henri to the Rescue and explain the Plant a Story Seed Program.

On May 1, 2025, thanks to third grade teacher, Katie Brenner, I will present two similar third grade assemblies at the Landisville Primary Center in Lancaster, PA. I am excited about my return visit to this school in my backyard.

And finally, p-sst…. wanna know a secret?

Spoiler alert!!

Lisa Madenspacher and I have been working on a new children’s book since November 2024. We are approaching the production stage.
